The Question Every New Client Asks

VLT percentage determines how dark your tint looks. But here’s what most people miss: ceramic film’s heat rejection has nothing to do with darkness. A light 70% VLT ceramic film outperforms a dark 20% dyed film on every metric that matters. Here’s how to choose the right percentage for your vehicle.

What Does Tint Percentage Mean?

Tint percentage refers to Visible Light Transmission, or VLT. It measures how much light passes through the film. A higher percentage means more light gets through. A lower percentage means darker tint.

70% VLT lets 70% of light through. 5% VLT lets almost no light through. That is the entire scale.

Important: tint percentage is about visible light, not heat. A high-quality ceramic film at 70% VLT can still block up to 70% of heat. Darkness and heat rejection are separate properties. This is why ceramic film outperforms cheap dark film at every level.

Florida Tint Laws: What You Need to Know First

Before choosing a percentage, you need to know what is legal. Florida law sets minimum VLT requirements for each window position. Violating these laws can result in fines and required removal of the film.

The VLT Scale Explained

Here is what each level looks like and who it is right for.

70% VLT. Nearly clear. Barely visible from outside or inside. Still blocks a meaningful amount of heat with ceramic film. Best for front side windows where you want maximum legal flexibility or a clean, subtle look. Popular on luxury vehicles where aesthetics matter.

50% VLT. A light, comfortable tint. Visible up close but does not dramatically change the look of the vehicle. Noticeably reduces glare and heat. A popular choice for front side windows when you want performance without a dark appearance.

35% VLT. A medium tint. This is the most common choice in South Florida for rear side windows on sedans. Provides solid heat rejection and UV protection. Gives the vehicle a polished, intentional look without going too dark.

20% VLT. A noticeably dark tint. Provides strong privacy. Allows the occupant to see out clearly but makes it difficult to see in. Very common for rear windows. Legal for rear sides and rear glass in Florida with no restriction.

15% VLT. Very dark. Popular for SUVs on rear glass. Creates strong privacy and a bold look. Excellent heat and UV performance. Legal on rear windows in Florida.

5% VLT. Limo tint. Almost completely blacked out. Almost exclusively used on rear windows. Provides maximum privacy. Not recommended for driver or front passenger windows for safety and legal reasons. Read more about driving with dark tint at night.

Which Percentage Is Right for Your Vehicle?

For most South Florida drivers who want the best combination of comfort, performance, and clean aesthetics, we recommend:

For luxury and exotic vehicles where the look is as important as the performance, 35% across all rear glass with 50% on the fronts gives a balanced, premium appearance without going excessively dark.

Drivers in Miami Beach and Brickell who prioritize privacy alongside comfort tend to choose 20% on rear glass and 35% or 50% on front sides.

One More Thing to Remember

Tint percentage only tells you about darkness. It does not tell you about quality. A cheap 20% film will fail in South Florida conditions within a few years. It will purple, bubble, and peel. A ceramic 35% film will outlast it by a decade and outperform it on every heat and UV metric.

Choose your percentage based on your needs. Choose your film based on quality. Those are two separate decisions, and both matter.
